Think Big kicks off journey supporting minority business owners – WIFR

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) – On Friday, a ribbon cutting is held for Think Big, an organization supporting women and minority-owned businesses.
Several elected officials and lawmakers attended Friday’s event, honoring those who made the organization possible. Duntai Mathews, Think Big cofounder, says Friday marks the start of something big, explaining it is a historic day for the city of Rockford.
“What I want to see is the people come together, come in the center, utilize it and make it something special,” said Mathews.
Mathews was an entrepreneur in Rockford and says he understands resources are needed for individuals wanting to start their own business. He explains most new businesses fail because they aren’t prepared.
“I think everybody has to have something more than going to a four-year degree. You have to have reality and people, entrepreneurs who actually live it to give it to you from their perspective,” said Mathews.
The Think Big building will allow the organization to expand its school of business, offer workshops, an event space and a podcast studio.
“We’re so excited to be here on the North End. One thing that they do is the North End Market,” said Shelia Hill, the executive director of Think Big. “We’re so grateful that Think Big will be taking a huge role in that We also will be doing the same, similar things just to make sure that we coincide what’s already happening here.”
Hill explains it is important to show minority and women-owned businesses are a large part of the city’s success.
“They are part of the economic engine in our community. It’s a huge key to the success of economic development and growth in our city,” said Hill.
United States Senator Dick Durbin attended Friday’s event in support of Think Big.
“You’ve got behind you not only good people in the community, but also good experiences leading to kick-off, and that’s what I see this center being: Think Big,” said Durbin.
Hill says Think Big has already helped more than 600 people and 259 individuals have already started their own business.
The first school of business will be taking place in April. Those interested can go to its website to sign up.
