MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a week of torrential rain, below-freezing temperatures, and snow, the organizers of Mardi Gras in Memphis are hoping to get thousands of people out of the house this weekend for a good time.
The owners of Fat Tuesday in Downtown Memphis are bringing Mardi Gras to Memphis this weekend.
“Everybody is snowed in right now. Everybody is sitting around trying to figure out what this thing is going to look like on the weekend, and I think it is going to be perfect weather for everyone to come out,” said Cherina Rowand, a business owner.
The weather is heating up just in time for this New Orleans tradition. The good times are set to roll Friday night at 6:00 p.m. with a bar crawl on Main Street Downtown.
“It’s going down. Ya heard me. What’s up, Memphis?” said Mannie Fresh, DJ. Yup, that’s DJ Mannie Fresh. He will be hosting the Fat Tuesday Mardi Gras parade and block party that’s on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. near GE Patterson and Main.
On Sunday, the weekend of events will culminate with a masquerade ball. A portion of the proceeds will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, The HUB, local shelters, and local marching bands.
“We want this to grow from a regional event to a national event to really drive tourism to Memphis,” said Mowbray Rowand, a business owner.
