Indian Railways to issue NFT tickets for Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 – TravelBizMonitor

Passengers travelling to the Maha Kumbh Mela, a Hindu festival and pilgrimage held once every 144 years, will experience a digital revolution as Indian Railways partners with blockchain firm Chaincode Consulting. On January 13, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) announced plans to digitize the spiritual journey through NFT-based tickets minted on the Polygon blockchain, utilising the NFTtrace platform for real-world asset traceability.
The Polygon blockchain was chosen for its faster throughput, low gas fees, and eco-friendly scalability. A dedicated portal will manage the NFT tickets, offering a seamless and innovative approach to ticketing. Alok Gupta, CEO, Chaincode Consulting, stated, “By partnering with IRCTC and leveraging the Polygon blockchain, we are enabling a digital-first experience that complements the spiritual significance of the Maha Kumbh while introducing a new level of engagement through NFTs.”
With approximately 1.2 million train tickets booked daily on IRCTC’s platform, the initiative aims to attract global participants while showcasing the potential of public blockchains to eliminate intermediaries. Aishwary Gupta from Polygon Labs highlighted India’s history of leveraging the Polygon blockchain for state and central projects, emphasising the low cost and high throughput benefits.
This move follows Indian Railways’ previous limited-time NFT ticketing drive for the Holi festival in 2024, which celebrated the cultural heritage of cities like Lucknow and Delhi. The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 NFT tickets promise to blend tradition with technology, providing a traceable and immersive digital souvenir for pilgrims attending the world-renowned event.
