Smartphone technology helps therapists prevent falls in senior living residents – McKnight's Senior Living

Smartphone-driven gait analysis is giving occupational therapists in certain residential long-term care settings the ability to pick up even the slightest changes in a senior living resident’s mobility, allowing providers to intervene before a change turns into a fall.
Healthcare Therapy Services, which provides contract physical, occupational and speech therapy services, is partnering with OneStep to bring its AI-powered digital care platform to senior living and care. The partnership leverages OneStep’s smartphone-driven gait analysis to prevent falls in assisted living communities, skilled nursing facilities, homes and hospitals.
The partners launched a pilot program at Bethel Wellness Community in Evansville, IN, which has helped therapists identify fall risks early and intervene in a timely manner. Using OneStep’s AI-powered motion analysis, HTS therapists can monitor residents’ mobility and stability and identify areas of muscle and skeletal weakness.
The community offers rehabilitation and skilled nursing.
OneStep’s digital care platform uses smartphone sensors to transform real-life movement into clinical insights. The platform includes tools for real-time data collection, AI-driven insights, telehealth capabilities, remote therapeutic monitoring and administrative management. The remote monitoring enables therapists to continue to guide individuals even when they complete therapy and return to wherever they consider home.
According to OneStep, the technology has led to 27 fewer falls annually per 100 residents.
OneStep and HTS said the success of the pilot program will pave the way for broader implementation of the digital care platform across all HTS partner communities.
