The Benton County Assessment Department announced this week that it now offers e-filing for business personal property accounts. Benton County business owners are asked to use the online system to file their business property returns.
Officials touted e-filing as fast, convenient and secure with a system that minimizes input errors and reduces costs for both the business owner and the county.
All businesses, including those operating as sole proprietors, partnerships, corporations and limited liability companies, are required to file returns annually. The business personal property return includes information about assets such as equipment, machinery, furniture and fixtures used in the operation of a business.
Oregon state law mandates that all business personal property be assessed for taxation purposes. The assessments are used to determine property taxes owed by businesses and serve as a source of revenue for funding local government services, including schools, roads and public safety.
The deadline to file without incurring a penalty is March 15. Business personal property returns filed electronically will be digitally postmarked during submission, the county said.
Business owners can obtain the necessary forms and instructions for filing their returns from the Benton County Assessor’s Office website. Assessor’s office staff are available to assist businesses with any questions or concerns related to the filing process.
The Benton County Assessment Department will offer a virtual workshop on business personal property accounts on Feb. 6 from 10 a.m.–noon. Those interested in attending are asked to send a message to the Department of Assessment with a valid email address through its contact webpage.
