Align Technology, known for its Invisalign clear aligners, has chosen Tempe, Arizona as the site of its new global corporate headquarters. The move was effective starting January 1, 2021, and is part of Align’s strategic plan to push forward in its digital and innovative capabilities. While the company’s San Jose campus will still continue to be a hub for innovation and product development, the new headquarters in Tempe will host key executives, including President and CEO Joe Hogan. According to a press release from the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, this decision comes with a host of benefits for employees, with 150 of them being offered relocation packages to the new location, but with no layoffs occurring as a result of this move.
In a similar trend of technology and innovation-driven companies flocking to Arizona, Norwegian industrial software firm Cognite announced to soon establish its global headquarters in Tempe. The company, specialized in leveraging generative AI for real-time data solutions in manufacturing and energy, has already started the transition with a lease of nearly 30,000 square feet in Hayden Ferry Lakeside III. Cognite’s CEO, Girish Rishi, outlined the plan to create more than 100 new jobs in the region. According to a Phoenix Business Journal interview, Rishi outlined a future where 150 employees will call the Tempe headquarters home, with most being new hires.
Arizona’s technology sector growth has been gaining momentum, with high-profile moves from companies like Align Technology and Cognite. Governor Doug Ducey and other state officials have expressed pride and optimism regarding the state’s burgeoning tech reputation. Align CEO Joe Hogan emphasized that the move to Tempe is a strategic step to enhance the company’s industry-leading digital capabilities while also achieving greater operating efficiencies. Hogan told the Greater Phoenix Economic Council, “Innovation is the heart of Align and core to who we are as an organization.”
For Cognite, their decision to open up in Tempe was heavily influenced by the local talent pool and the robust tech ecosystem, including the presence and contributions of Arizona State University and the University of Arizona in the AI space. “The objective of our board of directors when they recruited me two and a half years ago, was always to base [Cognite] in the U.S.,” Rishi expressed in the Phoenix Business Journal interview. The move is not just to a burgeoning tech hub but to effectively to create a “center of gravity” for the company’s operations while maintaining other global offices as “centers of excellence.”
Both Align and Cognite see potential to grow their operations and customer base in the U.S., with Arizona offering a competitive and supportive environment for such expansions. Align’s move is expected to create over a hundred jobs, while Cognite looks to add strength to Tempe’s tech-based business community with new roles and partnerships. The seal of approval from public figures such as Tempe Mayor Corey Woods, who celebrated Align’s move during a pandemic as a testament to Tempe’s resilience and appeal, underscores the city’s growing influence in the tech industry.
